I saw Carlos Santana on Friday night. It was a good time. The first band that opened for him was his son's band, The Salvador Santana Band. They sound a little like Carlos' new stuff but with a major rap and hip hop flavor. Not really my cup of tea, but they were alright. After that was Los Lonely Boys, who got a tremendous reception. They were tight as usual.

A scary moment during the Los Lonely Boys' set. Santana came out and joined them for the last couple numbers. During the first one, he got a little too exuberant while doing a solo. He was up at the front of the stage and started walking/running backward. He lost his balance and crashed really hard right in front of the drummer. In a split second, seemingly out of nowhere, about 10 stage crew guys rushed out to check on him. Everybody including the band was a bit panicked, but they kept playing. It looked like he bruised his elbow pretty bad. Other than that, Carlos was fine and in one piece, but I'm not sure I can say the same about his guitar. They gave him a new one to play for the rest of the song, but the other guitar wasn't seen again for the rest of the night. Those PRSs aren't cheap, Carlos, so be careful! He joked about it later on, saying the Los Lonely Boys' music is so good it knocks him flat, or something to that extent.

Carlos started with his new stuff which I'm not overly fond of, so I wasn't digging that too much. But then when he got to the "older" stuff is when the show took off for me. A Santana concert is quite the experience. It's VERY high energy and lots of people were up dancing around. Oye Como Va was probably the highlight for the crowd. That got everyone jumping. In fact, I don't remember much of the song because there were about 4 gorgeous women salsa dancing nearby to the song. I like Carlos and all, but put 4 hotties dancing in front of me and I forget what a guitar is.

For me hearing Samba Pa Ti was probably the highlight. Also, there was an incredible 2 or 3 minute bluesy/jazzy/latiny trumpet solo in the introduction to "Maria Maria" that completely floored me. It was absolutely stunning. Nobody else seemed to really dig it though, which I couldn't believe.

A few disappointments. 1) On a couple songs, Carlos was buried way down in the mix and you couldn't hear him that well. 2) He didn't play Europa. I thought he'd play it in the encore but, this leads me to 3) There was no encore. Oh well, can't win 'em all. It was a blast anyway.
