Needs final shaping, drilling and slotting for tuners, nut and bridge. I'll probably route a piece of laminated MOTS for the "fret" markers. I'm thinking about a water-based transparent stain. Maybe a two-step: black, wipe-off to highlight the grain, then a color, then lacquer.

I know that less expensive lap steels use cheaper, Fender-clone saddle bridges and have relatively narrow spacing -- but not as narrow as Gibson, as you point out. I haven't actually drilled or routed for a bridge yet. pointers on good sources for that would be useful. Again, I like the over-the-top stopbar design, but am more interested in doing what's best for playability. I've spent a fair amount of time shaping maple for the body -- no reason to rush the hardware and compromise the job.

You won't notice it much unless you go way up the neck, past the 24th fret. Ideally it shouldn't have a radius, but I've played regular guitars that's been converted to lap steel and it didn't bother me much. Usually the weight and pressure from your hand and steelbar will even it out.

I'd be more concerned about the string spacing, the Gibson spacing is very narrow compared to what's standard on 6-string lap steels. Even the Fender spacing feels a bit narrow to me, but of course you can get used to anything (just imagine you're playing an 8-string.... :D ).

Steinar
