Last post unless someone comments; I have had the guitar for a bit now and this is the one I have been after. The pickups, an 8 string version of a Strat pickup (from 1955!!!) are exceptionally woody toned and sweet. They have the Fender tone in spades; the blend knob is set with just a little of the neck pickup to fatten it but still have a lot of twang. I am a little shocked at how strong they are; I haven't measured the output but they are pretty hot. The neck pickup is VERY hot. Slight adjustments to pickup height make an enormous difference. It is great slightly overdriven but not fuzzy. Think SRV on his hotter numbers.
The body, swamp ash and as stated before it is quite thick but light. Surprisingly light, actually. It has a big acoustic tone that almost sounds reverb-y. Of course I use very heavy strings, which helps the drive out a lot. With a small Marshall Lead 12 combo, it is a nice clean tone and reasonable dirty sound, though with any of my amps it sounds pretty thin when the OD is cranked. I am a bit surprised by that, really. I am going to get a set of legs for it so I can play it without laying it on a table. SCORE!

OK, so I have had the guitar for a few days. I put my flat wounds on it, spent a little time working out the quirks and played for a few hours. What a cool instrument! 8 strings makes a huge difference in available note runs. I decided on A6, the tuning on it when it got here; after spending some time on it I think it is going to be my new adventure. I really like the available chords and inversions, though it will take a lot of playing before I am comfortable improvising on it. The pickups are quite fat and tasty, with a very strat-like singing quality to them. Totally different from the Supro string-through sound, very twangy and organic. I think the thickness of the body lends itself to the overall tone, and certainly adds to the sustain. All in all I think this will be a great guitar to learn new things with, and maybe even get inspired to record!
