Hey welcome ozzie! Bunch of great folk here.

My two cents: maybe a heavier or thicker steel would help, or maybe a longer (wider) one? And as far as the feel of playing with fingerpicks - I know what you mean! It's so weird - I've played with fingerpicks before, and I've played with slides before, but when you're playing with both at the same time, I notice, it's like *nothing* on either hand is actually in direct contact with the strings. Maybe that's the hardest thing to get used to.

Same with the 'false' harmonics, for me, at least. I could get used to fretting a note on a regular guitar and then looking up the neck for the harmonic and hitting it. I don't have to worry about where the fretting fingers are and can concentrate on the harmonic. With the lap steel, there's no physical feel as to when I'm on a note or not so I have to look at the where the steel is, make sure my hand doesn't drift, then look up and find the harmonic and then hit it. My steel hand always drifts *up* because, I guess, I'm thinking 'higher' when I'm going for the harmonic, and my hand 'goes higher.' I'm most interested in the older Hawaiian style of steel playing, so there's *supposed* to be a lot of harmonics (or bell, or chime tones) in the playing.

I just have to keep practicing it :)

I have trouble sometimes getting a nice clean bass note. If I slide the bar a little toward the bass string the sound and sustain of the note improves heaps. Sometimes if I angle the bar and put a little more preasure on the bar the note sounds better. It must be me as I have a new hand made weiss, a Regal dobro and an old Oahu lap slide acoustic. (what a great old guitar) and I seem to have trouble with all three guitars.
Hi Alan,-

you could always try to experiment with different bars, but that's a hobby that can be quite expensive..
It's mostly a matter of technique, and a problem most has had to overcome. I still find it hard sometimes to switch fast from playing single notes on the top strings, with the bar tilted, to covering all strings and get a clear tone from the bass strings. If you listen closely to "Northern Lights" on my CD you'll hear a couple of rather unpleasent "quacks" because of that, but I decided to keep the take anyway....

Steinar
