Think about all those nice movable chords you know on strings 2-4 in standard. They're still there in G. And plenty of others.
Last Christmas I gave myself a guitar slide.

I think it takes a long time to develop slide chops. I'm not really in a hurry to become a great slide player, but I did make up a little slide exercise and worked it into my daily routine. Basically I just play a C major scale entirely on the second string, and then play an F major scale entirely on the first string, etc. around the cycle of keys, choosing whichever string is most convenient. Then I do the same with melodic minor scales starting with Am on the 3rd string. (all standard tuning)

My slide skills still leave much to be desired. But my sense of how notes connect together "horizontally" has really improved a lot in a short time. Not just knowing what's located where, but also being able to move to the right position more instinctively. Maybe it's my imagination but I think the spatial skills carry over well to normal guitar playin. Even if the effect is just imagined, at least it gives me more confidence changing position. For the sake of study alone I think a slide is worth the investment. (all $5-$10 of it)

The thing that puts me off with serious slide playing is that it leads straight into the world of alternate tunings. It's taken so much effort and so many years to learn the guitar neck, the idea of learning an alternate tuning really scares the hell out of me. Life is short.

So I'll just remaing curious for now.
