You can really put it to good use with a sustained vibrato, too, like at the end of that Summertime recording.

The main reason I like nickel electric strings is their very bright tone.

Another reason I like them is that I've learned, as my teacher had explained he did himself years ago when I was first starting out, that it's handy to use the same strings on your acoustics and electrics. Same playing feel. Makes string inventorying mighty simple as well. I went through experimenting with heavier and heavier strings on my reso. Got up to .017-.070". Guess what? Standard .012-.052" electric nickel strings are way better IMO.

A nice side benefit of this is that basic nickel electric strings are dirt cheap, and they last nearly forever. I'm super cheap myself, and I like that a lot.

I've never heard Hoyt Axton's original. I need to look that up, for sure!

As for Summertime, it's basically just a version that started off with my discovery that it was easy to play in Open Gmin. (Same as Amin, a step apart in pitch as noted above.) When I showed my teacher what I'd been doing, originally I'd gone into that tuning to easily play I Wonder As I Wander, which I wanted to play and sing for Christmas. I'd gotten that down easily enough. He was unfamiliar with the song, thought it was a cool thing I'd done, but wasn't too excited. Then I showed him how the basic Carol of the Bells fell readily to hand, and he was a lot more interested. Then I started into Summertime, and he couldn't take any more. He said "Give me your guitar!" He'd never played in Gmin tuning in his life, but he just took off jamming on it with stuff that'd bring tears to your eyes. He showed me some of his licks, I've played around with it, and have my own version. We've had lots of fun playing duets, taking turns playing rhythm chords and doing lead on it. Dunno about tab. And yeah, it's the Gershwin tune. I used to get rocked to sleep to that one when I was a wee tot.

Hey, I just found an old version (I think about 3 1/2 years old) of Summertime that I'd squirreled away in a dark musty corner of the Web:
http://oldengine.org/members/culp/summertime.mp3
(It's in Gmin, on my Johnson Tricone.)
