the singer from bright eyes sings very low....so its possible that with a female voice its too low for her...meaning she has to sing it an octave higher....with it too high....so she may be singing it an octave higher and then 4 semitones lower than that when you take the capo off....the problem with putting the capo higher is the guitar gets a little out of tune each fret the capo goes up..and by the time your around the 5th/6th fret you really start to notice it.

the way to solve the problem is this. work out what chords your playing eg Am and drop it 4 semitones. so play an Fm with the capo on 4th fret....repeat this for each chord. that whay she can sing it in the KEY she wants and you can keep the sound of the guitar being played with a capo on 4th fret....

I just wanted to make sure there wasn't some way it wasnt easier to hit the notes by moving a little forward (like maybe capo 5 or 6) that would be closer the the key rather then moving down so many. but if theres 12, then i guess moving down is the way to go. As for the song, yea it just sounds like any other song when played open, i like the distinctness and chimey effect of playing it on 4, it adds alot to it.

Hello, i am performing some cover songs soon and i was having some trouble with the girl i'm working with. wondering if anyone can help. I am playing guitar and she is singing. The specific song that is causing problems is called "first day of my life" and its by "bright eyes".

if you want to listen to it, you can here for free - http://www.songza.com/
and here is a guy playing it pretty well - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_rHNaS3B4p4

It is supposed to have a capo on the 4th fret, however she asked me to play it open (with no capo). I personally think that it ruins the song and i can't stand playing it that low, now i know that not everyone can sing the same, and i don't want to complain too much because maybe she just can't sing it the same way it was written. but it just seems to me that there's no way she can be that far off. She's been singing with lessons for 2 years so she must know something. She claims that she's singing it higher than the actual song, yet she is asking me to play the notes 2 steps lower? I get the feeling shes hitting a whole entire new key or something and i wondering what i should do. Anyway, any advice you guys have would be appreciated.
