Slide in standard tuning seemed a natural progression for me....I started playing slide in open G, and pretty much stuck to that over the years. Till I realised that the D G and B strings are still the same as standard tuning, and that's where I play most of my solos anyway....

If you're noodling around at, say, the 12th fret then basically you're messing around with a G chord - there's a nice double stop at the 15th fret on the E and B strings. If you play the top three strings - G B and E - you've got the relative minor of the G chord, Em - include the D string and it's an Em7, OR a G6 chord. Play the A D and G strings at the 12th fret - you've got a Dsus4 - D is the Vth in the scale of G, so that's handy to have.

It's just a question of experimenting, really, and finding out where best to play....I can see why Kirk Lorange likes to play slide in standard, it's fairly easy to find your way around, as opposed to learning the whole fretboard again in a different tuning....I can also see why he's keen on drop D for slide, you've the added bonus of a powerchord on the bottom two (or three) strings.

:D :D :D

Vic

I never was any good with standard tuning slide work. so the slide god blessed me.
I don't think I had an epiphany. I think the fret board just became clearer in my cerebal head. I nailed the notes. I had ideas and knew where to go.
guess all this time of open tuning my brain had been processing. cool.

I am willing to bet, however, that if I grabbed my strat tonight and tried the same thing I would blow it big time.

so keep on playing. good stuff happens.
