Hey! Yes, Nick, this is a good idea! For me, it's harder to write music than lyrics! Thats because i've been playing guitar for 2 years, and i'm not so good at it, so i can only
play chords while im singing:) Last week, i sent 5 of my songs to our guitar player. My chords-relations were said to be old (G-F-C and such)! Allthough i disagree, cause im sure, that simplicity CAN be great for a songwriter. Then, he said, that my song got no shape and so.
And because i like critics (believe or not, they help me a lot!), i've been working on my music ever since. Help me! -let's talk about "modern", or should i say pop progression.
P.S. If there are any mistakes in my text, please forgive me-i'm from Slovenia!
Hope to hear from you soon,
Marc

I have a lever arch folder full of lyrics, comments, cheat sheets full of chord sequences and ideas, sheets full of chord boxes, tabs and standard notations, a whole website of my own with some finished MP3's on it, MP3's on Adam's superb website, four master tapes and a CD of some of the songs I got finished. My sons' friends think I'm the greatest, and a few of them asked for copies of the CD.

And you know what? I look at that CD, and I feel really good. Would I have done that without this place? I don't know for sure, but I suspect not.

So, we might not be able to start over at week 1 again, and it's taken a few months to get my work under control enough to be able to get back into the songwriting forum pages again, but I'm up for a mixture of lyrical and musical assignments.

Alan :-)

Hi Everyone!

I know I've been kinda absentee for a while, but I'm getting back into writing more and I thought I'd put in my 2 cents. I like David's idea about maybe a lyric assignment every 2 weeks and a music assignment every month or something like that. My only concern would be that with people doing 2 separate things, and everyone not necessarilly doing both, critiques would suffer. People tend to only critique on topics that they are working on - I know I'm guilty of that. I guess it would just be important for everyone to try extra hard to make sure that everyone is getting comments on their songs. Nothing is more frustrating or disheartening than watching one of your songs go down the board with none or only 1 comment. Anyway, I have really enjoyed this board over the past year and I'm looking forward to whatever the new year brings for it.

:)Portia

Hi'a All from sunny Cape Town South Africa......

I am really looking forward to gettng my teeth into writing this year and putting music to my songs. I am also looking forward to more collaboration with members like I did during the last few months since I joined and would like to thank Maxwell, Porr, Staid1 Joshua and David Hodge for their help and encouragement and allowing me to play around with their lyrics.

For this year my suggestion would be to start with meters of different variants and then go on to rhyming of different varients including blank verse. I know this might be old hat to a lot of us here, but if you read though the Guitar Songwriters forum, a lot of the newbies have a problem with this and I think it would be a great foundation for them and a good brain refresh for us all.
If any help is needed I am more than willing to help here and in any other area you may need help.
I have the time and the inclination, just drop me a line.

Anyways .......... it is great to be back.

Jamir ;)

Hi, I have not posted on the boards for a while but have now decided to re-surface. So first of all how are you all? And I am delighted to see that even more has been added to the forum and that there are loads more new people here since I last came by.

Secondly, and on to my reason for posting, I agree in one way or another with everything that has been said.

The people who are relative newcomers to the SSG would greatly benefit from carrying on, to some extent, with the lyric challenges as they are now. While some of the guys (and gals) that have been here from the beginning may like to try something new after all the progress they have made with their lyric writing.

However, the seasoned SSG-ers wouldn't want all their hard work going to waste so a continuation of the challenges would be nice to keep them sharp. Also, although the newcomers need to work on lyric-writing it would do them no harm, in fact great good, to have some musical based topics to have a stab at.

So perhaps continuation of what we've got with some addition's rather than a complete change. You could also integrate the music and lyrics. For example taking a three or four week block and each week setting progressive topics/challenges with the first two weeks being lyrics based and the final two music based which would allow the opportunity to look at arranging and possibly collaborations. After all music is great and so are lyrics but if you can't tie them together your song is gonna suck.

Just a thought,

Pete. :)

Thanks to you all for your interests. I'll try to answer your questions as best I can.

First, to Jane, signing up for Guitar Noise News, our free (and spam free) newsletter, is a s easy as going to this page:

https://www.guitarnoise.com/newsletter.php
Simply fill in the email @ddress you'd like to receive the newsletter and you're set.

Now, concerning moderators and administrators...

If being a moderator meant having expertise, then I wouldn't be allowed to be one. While our moderators go above and beyond to answer questions, their primary function is to help maintain the civility and frinedliness of the forum pages. So having patience and tact are the main virtues we look for.

Also, a moderator does need to visit the pages on a regular basis.

Being a moderator gives you a special power - your "status stars" will go from being yellow to being green on whatever pages you're moderating.

"Administrating" can involve a lot of things. On this board (Sunday Songwriters Group), it would mean helping to come up with new topics for assignments, making sure they get posted in a timely manner and trying to answer questions that may come up in that particular area.

So, as you see, none of this is very hard. It can be time consuming on occasion, but that's only if one person ends up doing all the work (as Nick, Paul and myself will readily attest).

If you've more questions or are definitely interested, IM Nick or myself directly and we'll be more than happy to answer what questions we can.

Now let's get back to putting SSG - Year Two in order!

Peace
