That's pretty darn well written.

The second line of verse one you might want to think of someway to say "afraid to show their face"  although I think your line does just fine.


The second verse has an odd combo of "in my bed" and "left standing"  You might want to think of contrasting your enemy being dead, with you being alive.  Or maybe you are left half alive, but he is all dead.

Verse 3 is great.

Verse 4 is even better.

The preachers are still preaching in this god forsaken place,
I'm sure they only do it just to show their face,
But they can't meet my stare,
And they can't banish my despair,
Cos Hell has taken over and Heaven lost the race.

The battlefield is miles away yet raging in my head,
I fought them in the mountains now I fight them in my bed,
Hand to hand and toe to toe,
I fought the hated foe,
And as I am left standing so my enemy is dead.

My foxhole now is occupied by someone half my age,
Fed on fear and innocence and a politician's rage,
Back home they all support the boys,
The pundits make the proper noise,
I just want to flee the horror no ticker tape parade.

The preachers are still preaching in this god forsaken place,
They don't seem to realise I'll not see Heaven's grace,
Atrocities committed,
In the life I have just quitted,
Do battle with your conscience as I try to hide my face.
