I have some trouble with the whole murder allegory when describing the end of a relationship. Not that an explanation will change your point of view into "liking" the idea, but here is the thought process:

To John - you might want to check out the old "Sherlock Holmes" series that PBS ran ages ago (as part of their "Mystery" program), starring Jeremy Brett as Holmes. The scripts are truly as close to the original stories as you're likely to find and Brett is probably the best Holmes portrayer that we're likely to see.
