Hey gang, thanks for the feedback.

Paul, wow, I'm honoured that you remember Made in America. It's still one of my favourites too. I think you're right about 'vomit' even though it is metaphorical vomit, it still seems out of place.

Bob, thanks. Simple is what I was going for... originally listening to the Kings of Convenince while writing.

Trevor, I debated whether or not to use 'pedophile' or not. You're right, it definitely shocks, and I like the contrast/comparison it makes. I used it partly also because during writing, there was a bill in our parliament here in Canada that proposed increasing the age of sexual consent from 14 to 16. Because of a strange confluence of other laws, having the age of consent at 14 made 14-16 year old children prime targets for prostitution ( extremely light penalties for the kids, and no penalties for the johns ). Canada is, in fact, a hot spot for sex tourism, where people who would be prosecuted for having sex with 14-16 year olds in their own country can come visit Canada and do so legally. Anyway, it was weighing on my mind a lot, and so it made its way into the song.

Its not that its a bad line, in any way, its just that I dont like it I think its just the "vomit" word. Maybe be "Back to decay" or something. I think its that "vomit" is too real, wheras a metaphor would be gentler on the listener.
Great song Rob

Paul

Hey all,

This is my first attempt at writing a song that did not contain the words 'I', 'you', or 'we'. I ran out of steam by the end and used an 'our' though.

By way of confession: I didn't realize until I was humming this to myself while out for a walk this afternoon how similar this is to Downhere's 'A Thousand Miles Apart'. It wasn't intentional, but I have loved the song since I first heard them perform it. In a live setting the bass player switches to a muted trumpet and it is awesome. Anyway, lyrically it is quite different.

As always, you can here it over at Soundclick: http://www.soundclick.com/bands/songInfo.cfm?bandID=337003&songID=5312762

Everyone Lies
©2007 Robert Gowland

Affordable housing, red carpets
Suburban welcome mats
Walmart greeters
Smiles on the faces of strangers on the bus
Change in a tin cup
The practiced avoid their eyes
Everyone lies

Roses and kissing booths
Poems and g-strings full of cash
Tuxedo speaks a promise
To the woman wearing the white dress
Whispers by candle light
Club hoppers and pedophiles
Everyone lies

Gun runners, plastic surgeons
Life coach and the federal reserve
Home free, auto-pilot
Fighter pilot, missiles to deter
Gold's glitter and the flash of a knife
Everyone lies

Lovers and soldiers
Pandemic disease
Building a fortress
Like dust in the breeze

Back to the vomit
To swallow disease
Drawn by our passion and brain chemistry

Godhood or squatter's rights
Everyone lies
