....I am having a hard time seeing the connection with the topic for the week....

Sometimes you just have to go where the muse takes you! All I'm doing when I set the assignments is giving you a blank canvas - it's up to you what you paint on it. The assignment's a basic starting point - hopefully, interesting enough to stimulate your intellect. Where you go from there with it is up to you.

Remember, the SSG was originally set up as a place to PRACTISE songwriting once a week, or at least bring it to the fore... you get a song out of it, all well and good. It might be a keeper, it might not - but hopefully you'll learn by writing, and from your experience of writing. The assignment might not completely captivate you - but sometimes it might take you in a slightly different direction, like PBee's song this week. It's not fulfilling the LETTER of the assignment - but it's capturing the spirit of the assignment, and therefore the spirit of the SSG and its intention - to get you to write.

I really don't mind if you get sidetracked and wander off a little from the intended topic - it's good to have guidelines, but it's even better to write a song, and if you have to bend those guidelines, well - fair enough, bend away. This isn't a schoolroom, it's more of a co-operative - and hell, I'm not qualified to teach anyway.

Going back to the purpose of the SSG for a moment....it's changed a little over the last few years. Still the same in many ways - read topic, write song, discuss....but these days there are far more completed songs, seems as if almost every song comes with a demo. There was very little of that in "the old days" - very few mp3's posted. I suppose you could say it (the SSG) is evolving rather than changing - who knows where we'll be, say, five years from now? I know a few people - David, Kathy and John, for instance - regularly play quite a few songs that were born in this forum, and I've got a few myself that I play regularly. PBee's another one who plays live regularly and uses some of his SSG songs in his set list. I'd love to see everybody get a song out every week, and an MP3 to go with it - but even if you don't, the writing, and the reading and critiquing, will stand you in good stead.

Like I said, I'm just here to try and pique a little interest, provide a little inspiration if possible. My writing inspiration this week came from out of left field....my stimulation came from an argument elsewhere, I dashed down a couple of lines that came into my head and before I knew it I'd got a new song. It's not perfect yet, it isn't even finished to MY satisfaction - but I'm working on it, and hopefully by the time I've finished the music and altered the lyrics here and there, it'll be worth keeping. That's my ultimate aim when I start writing a song - to have something worth recording when I've finished. It doesn't always pan out that way, but hey, at least I'm trying! (Yeah, I know, VERY trying at times!)

Paul, sorry for sidetracking your thread a little - anyone cares to discuss this further, maybe we can carry it on in the "feedback" thread?

:D :D :D

Vic

James, thanks for the feedback
To me, that is the more important aspect than how closely the song is related to the weekly topic
To quote Barbosa: "the code (read assignment) is more what you'd call "guidelines" than actual rules". For me right now, its more important just to write something.

Having said that I did forget about the being dead bit  . As far as having a conversation with God, if one accepts the premise that God is omnipresent and lives in each and every one of us, this conversation is in fact with God, but I agree certainly not the form of God as a personified deity by western religions, but to our subjects mind God none the less.
For me your lyrics read more like one person telling another we are all connected in a universal "Oneness"....
Yes, in this case the "Oneness" should be interpreted as God.

KR,
thanks mate,
But it seems to me
We're all infected
Yeah, you and me
We are all connected
I did struggle a bit with that bridge, the “infected” is to allude to our Godliness regardless of who we are. You could also read that as saying “were all sinners”.

Cheers
Paul
