Hi Paul,

Interesting idea about the notion of what makes people what they are. It's something that I've had cause to ponder from a number of angles. I've worked a lot with intellectually disabled people over the last few years and what makes them what they are can be profoundly different from us, and from each other. We also had the experience of seeing Vicki's mother slowly unravel and then totally disappear, due to the effects of Alzheimer's. So what ultimately makes "you" is certainly pretty slippery. Is there a real core, or just a collection of machinery and experiences?

It came up again recently when a good friend (and long time smoker) died from throat cancer. A tremendous fighter, he stayed lucid and impressive until almost the end. But even he had to eventually let go of the bonds that kept everything together and slid away from the outer world and into an apparently almost randomly churning inner one, then a coma, and finally switched off. Another friend who also died earlier this year was a very religious man, so his view of dying was different again. The first man saw it as completely letting go of whatever "being human" had meant, whereas Tim's view was closer to the "I'm just stepping into another room" idea. Both men bowed out with impressive dignity though, and remained true to their ideals and character.

I hope that you do get a song out of your own angles on it all.

Chris
