Hey Dave,

First, thanks for stepping in. I know I'm not the only one who looks forward to these assignments each week.

Second, I'll consider myself duly chastened. I have to admit that I've been much more focused on completing the assignments lately than critiquing others' submissions. But it's like eating only the desert. You just don't get nourishment by skipping the meal. So here's a commitment to make a concerted effort starting this week and henceforth to provide something in the way of a critique for each submission. (and hope I haven't just over-extended myself.)

Thanks again Dave,

-- Scratch 8)

Hi there. Me again!

A couple of quick things before we tail off into this week's assignment. First, just a reminder that writing your assignment is only part of what we do here. Don't forget to take time to critique. Not only does it help the other writer, but writing a fair and encouraging critique can also improve your own writing as well. Nick, Bob and I (along with countless others here) have all found ways to improve our own lyric writing by taking the time to help others with theirs.

Most folks here have been truly great at this and I want to applaud and encourage you to continue doing so. Whether you know it or not, the critiques are a good part of what makes this forum work so well.

Second, do me a favor and watch for a bulletin in next week's newsletter, which I will do my best to post here as well.

All right then, onward:

WEEK 41

Point of view is perhaps one of the greatest tools a writer of any genre has at his or her disposal. Try to imagine how Huckleberry Finn might have turned out if Mark Twain had written it as a typical third-person narrative.

Being good writers, I'm sure that we all have dabbled with this from time to time. This week I'd like to give you a chance at either one or two exercises to hone your skills a little more. Please pick one of the two following ideas (or go ahead and do both if you've got the time and the muse is on your side) (and please send your muse my way for a day or so!):

A) Write a song of two or three verses (or four if you're ambitious) with a chorus after each verse. No bridge. Each verse will describe an incident or a feeling of a different narrator. The chorus has to be able to be sung by each narrator, so take great care that it fits each point of view very well.

B) Write a song from the point of view of an inanimate object. "Inanimate" does not include animals, politicians or your least favorite (insert "drummer," "bass player" or "viola player" here).

Have fun and I look forward to seeing you on the boards.

Peace
