The expression also survives as "Put it on the slate" when somebody has an account at a pub, for instance. Same deal with its origin - chalk the credit up and then rub it out when the money is paid. Back to a "clean slate". "Chalk it up" still survives too, even though it might now be a pen or even a keyboard entry.

A clean slate is a fresh beginning with no baggage from the past.

Slate is what they used to use for chalk boards back when my parents were in grade school. So a clean slate literally is a chalk board that has had all of its markings erased.
