Geez, I can still remember school slates....  :shock: <br><br>The expression also survives as "Put it on the slate" when somebody has an account at a pub, for instance. Same deal with its origin - chalk the credit up and then rub it out  when the money is paid. Back to a "clean slate". "Chalk it up" still survives too, even though it might now be a pen or even a keyboard entry.<br><br>(Sorry for the waffle - I just enjoy words and their backgrounds...  :oops:  )]]></content:encoded>
