She kept her world inside a bag,
Carried on her shoulder
A potpourri of items,
Small, larger, new and older

Some are dear and some forgotten
Memories beyond a cost
If ever she were to lose one,
A page from her life is lost

The faded pictures in her purse,
People she once knew
The old flame, she once thought,
"I'll end up back with you."

Holding the mirror to her face,
To add a bit of make-up,
To (help) cover the tears and scars,
Of her recent break-up

Digging further into her purse, (or Digging again into her bag)
As if it really mattered,
Brushed aside a tissue
All too worn and tattered

It once held the tears she shed
From an affair gone bad
Now it served as a reminder
Of that love she once had

Past the key to her apartment
The one (that) he'd returned
When he told her it was over
As far as he's concerned

An empty miniature brandy,
Dispatched in urgency,
For medicinal reasons only,
That heartbreak emergency

Finding the phone that was ringing
The ring tone was their song
A tune that told her he's calling
He hadn't called for so long
