Hey Trevor,

Not much to add here, but two things themes from the notes so far bear repeating.

You're doing great on the recording. Many of us likely were or still are uncomfortable with our own voices. I'm not sure how long you've been singing, but it does take practice. Some people here have been singing for decades and some are naturally gifted ( some have both going for them ). You'll never win the comparison game no matter how good you get, but if you've found an area to improve go for it. There are resources online. ( I think the Improve Your Voice podcast is out of Australia :) )

Secondly, I'll second Vics note on avoiding phrasing that you'd never use in real life. It's not that there aren't commericial songs that fall into that trap, it's just to challenge you to work for it. Honestly, I'm impressed with everyone who writes and records anything before Saturday night.

Don't be so hard on yourself though, man.

As Vic pointed out, a guy like Hendrix was very shy about his voice when in fact it's not so bad. He was so shy, when he first started recording "Are you Experienced?" in 1967, he had a wall surrounding him so nobody could watch him sing.

So don't worry about. I'm not too fond of my voice either, but I've played around with it a lot. What I do to try and find "my right voice" is record myself while singing a long with some of my favorite songs and then play it back. I really found my voice there, and now I feel like I can sing more music.

Keep it up man, you're doing very good. :)

...with that attitude you WILL get better! I know, I know, it's frustrating when your fingers or your voice won't go where you want - we've all been through that, and most of us - me included - still do. It's even more frustrating when you get told "practise, practise, practise"....but that's what it takes.
Vic yeah I do hate sponsors names splashed across a footy jersey but like the Carlsberg on my chest line you used Queensland jersey has XXXX splashed all over it , mmmmmmmm XXXX and footy now thats heaven

LOL that explains a lot......NOW I know why it's your favourite shirt......

Oh yeah - at one time I had a Liverpool shirt with Carlsberg across the chest, a St Helens shirt when they were sponsored by McEwans Lager, and a Lancashire (cricket) shirt from the days when they were sponsored by Tetley Bitter....

:D :D :D

Vic

My playing yeah sure it has improved , 4 years ago I had not even touched a guitar 3 years ago my fingers still ached in pain trying to press down those strings , so yeah it has improved , but look at where I was not so long ago ..

Pbee : M a t e The verse you mentioned first 2 lines I started writting about the Matriarch , then remembered something you said along time ago to me in a thread . It went something like this , " You started well then all of a sudden you went somewhere different , try to keep the subject in your focus " not exactly what you said but along them lines ..
Then I added comfortable describes you so you thought it was still about my footy jersey , ,,,
I don't believe I am hard on myself hard enough to be honest mate , I always try to be the best I can , and I know right now I can be better I won't stop saying I suck till I reach a level of playing that I am comfortable with .
Yep - just what I thought. There's nothing wrong with the MP3. First thing that struck me is how much your guitar playing is improving - nice and rhythmic, good timing. Nothing fancy, but it gets the job done. As for your voice - well, look at some of the great artists....Dylan never could sing, when I saw him in '05 his voice was dreadful....Neil Young's voice? He was once told he'd never make it as a singer, he was too nasal and whiny. Hendrix was said to loathe his singing voice - to be honest I didn't think it was that bad. They've all got one thing in common though - the passion they put into their performances.

Your voice has character - and like the instrument you play, you need to develope your voice and practise your singing. I'm living proof of that - I used to hate my voice, I used to apologise for the vocals beforehand. Now I can actually tolerate it.....I have to, it's the only one I've got! Try the singing forum for some tips - there must be some good ones in there. But above all, don't be afraid of your voice - rather, learn how to use it and use the unique qualities in your voice to their best effect. Try singing in different keys until you find one you're comfortable with - the capo is your best friend there.

Above all, enjoy making your music - your guitar playing's coming on in leaps and bounds!

:D :D :D

Vic

The line before that seems a little forced too.....try and make it a rule to write as you'd speak, maybe read the lines out loud to yourself - if they don't sound right to you, they won't to anyone else either....

It's nearly all good - just that little section needs re-doing. (Or explaining, in the case of "flossey"....)

OK, I'm off to lsten to the MP3 - and I'll bet it's nowhere near as bad as you make out.

:D :D :D

Vic

PS - Pretty cool shirt, I definitely prefer the oldie to the newbie - don't you wish, though, sports teams didn't have to have sponsors logos splattered all over them? We've been together for so long
Just like that old country song
Comfortable describes you.....
We don't know if your talking about the matriarch or the shirt, could be both – great. You could take this song to other places with this ambiguity, like comparing the matriarch to the shirt.
but I still think I stink
Trev the only place you stink is in YOUR head.
There's nothing wrong with your guitar playing, your timing is fine. OK the voice needs development, but so what, we could all use a bit of development, that's why we are here.
Don't be so bl**dy hard on yourself this isn't a competition this is about you exploring your creative side, and man have you ever done that.

Cheers

Paul
