Fair enough. :D

I didn't know that Bruce Springsteen had done that song, or indeed the whole "Seeger Sessions" album so I might have to get that one. After finding this one Youtube Pay Me My Money Down and Eeerie canal it looks like a must have. I'm not usually much of a fan of using so many multiple repetitions, especially if you're trying to play it for a laugh, and Pay me My Money Down lyrics look like another reasonably predictable moan about hard work conditions and dodgy bosses. So it was good to hear Springsteen and co have such a joyous romp with it. Great band and arrangement. Really enjoyable.

Cheers,

Chris

Great stuff.

The rage inducing 'sins' were very well chosen and described. The only thing that I did wonder about was varying the response a bit to suit the individual verses. I'd be getting seriously edgy by the time we got to the second time through the first verse and were heading for the sixteenth repeat of the same line. I guess that may be exactly the intention though - to drive the listener mad in the same way as the road incidents?

Perhaps it might be slightly kinder to have a structure where each verse has a unique response that's repeated three times, instead of four, and then followed once by the same last punch line "and turn that flaming blinker off". So Verse 1 could have a response relating to doddery drivers, Verse 2 about reckless teens, and Verse 3 about roadwork delays. Using the same punch line response at the end of each verse would still act as a themed link throughout, but not quite so repetitively.

On the final verse (the repeat of Verse 1) you could perhaps even repeat the "blinker" punch line once or twice, with a little more forcefulness each time?

It might give a bit more opportunity for a theatrical presentation by the singer, and the audience might be more inclined to chime in with the theme line if it was framed more as a punch line rather than a constant repetition. It's tough to wring a smile from the same punchline 16 times, but milking it for five or six should be achievable, especially if you have the triple repeats of "shift your scrawny *** ", or whatever to keep them apart a bit. Just a thought.

Cheers,

Chris
