It was a stretch lyrically and musically. The musical part came because I've been playing a lot of jazz for my chorus and those jazz chords were stuck in my head. This was a good exercise that so far has resulted in only an OK song. It seems you are trying some new things lyrically as well.....are you? If you are, it's a good thing. I'd like to hear what you are shooting for in the lyrics.

One aspect I miss from some of your earlier songs is an intimacy in the details of the relationship; especially relationships with problems.......I'd have to look them up again, but there was one song about a guy with drug problems and another I think about a father.....so this songs seems to be the perfect platform for details, but you don't take advantage......

..........I noticed there are NO concrete nouns in the song; ALL the nouns are abstract. Maybe that is why you felt it was "empty"......concrete nouns give the images and "weight" to the lyrics.

I will be working on the music some more. Right now, it's a series of chord progressions in search of a tune. But the recording will give you an idea of where I'm headed. I'm calling it jazz because of the jazz chords, but I don't really know what the genre is.

Good start :D

It took me a couple reads to figure the break up was in the singer's non-dream life.

Suggestion:

Consider changing this verse into a dream verse with more explicit details of the life the singer dreams about.....

......b/c the singer says it was nothing, but it was obviously something or they wouldn't break up......and since you don't reveal what the something was, this verse adds nothing to the song than what was already say in the chorus before it......so cut this verse out (maybe blend it into the chorus like Paul's suggestion) and get back into the dream.....with over the top-----romance and fantasy etc.....what she dreams about to keep her going.

....the idea's a bit reminiscent of "All I Have To Do Is Dream" by the Everly Brothers

Over something I never had. yes this is a really strong lyric I like it too. In fact you could try using this as the chorus and building the song around that. And the verses explore the different feelings that the singer obviously has but repeatedly denies them in the chorus. Of course we all know that the singer is just hiding behind the lie to protect themselves.

Over something I never had. I really like it, but at the same time I'm not sure I understand it. I wonder if exploring what was in the dreams versus reality might fill up some of that "emptiness."

I think this has real potential.
