it's less like standing for ideals(or only subconsciously.. for the ideals of devotion and faithfulness and not interfering in someone else's relationships)... it's .. about.. being dumped. basically. cause it#s all i can think about now. the song is about the state, when you realize you're about to be dumped, but can't give up on hope and can't believe this is really happening. you are down and the saddest person in the world(face in the dirt... clutching the grass...) and you feel like you're the only person still clinging to this relationship and wanting to make it work again (the last man standing). and you hope the person will see that and feel like that, too and will join you so this has another chance. but well... it hasn't. you just don't see it yet, because no clear "goodbye" has been said yet. and it's twice as bad, because none of this really is your fault. and you can do nothing about it.

Good start, rich and full of imagery - some is contradictory though and last man standing/face in the dirt is an example.

I like the idea of this being the last man standing for ideals that have long since gone it works very well and is a slightly different take on the assignment.
