Seems to me I remember my parents using the word beboppin' when I was a teen and going to the school sock hop but I'm not sure and that was the 70's. I also seem to remember the word bop used some on the TV show Happy Days and in some songs...."Be-Bop-A-Lula", or as background vocals in Elvis' version of "Don't Be Cruel".

I watched the Buddy Holly story on tv last night and I felt I knew the characters - really strange, and really sad sensation...

A couple of things, I know there's a problem with using the word BeeBop which I was cool about because when I done some more research it was more jazzy than rock and roll - I did think of using a few metaphores but wasn't really comfortable with it. In the film when he was playing with his band at the ice rink, the guy on the phone also referred to it as beebop, but I suppose that might just have been his ignorance at the music...?

Dave, thanks for your input. I see what you are saying but it still needs fine tuning. I'm not sure I like the first line where we say 'singing' and then 'playing' - I mean, I know he does both but it just sounds a bit odd.
I thought of 'timeless' but I think that's not strong enough and a bit general for my liking...

Not sure I'm going to be able to make an mp3 of this one either. Might have to wait until I return to my recording studios in the Bahamas, if Amy has finished with them... :roll:

One minor quibble with the first line of the chorus - can we do something to make it present tense like the rest of the lines in the chorus? Perhaps:

What would Buddy be singing if he if he were playing today?
Would he still be writing timeless tunes that ended with a-hey hey
Would rock and roll be different and what would the critics say
He's gone, but still within our hearts he'll never fade away

It looks like you did your research you pretty much have the story all laid out.
I like the mention of Maria. I think she is overlooked as part of this tragic story.
Even Don McClain only gives her a brief mention in American Pie.(more on that when I finish my lyrics)

The only criticism is the word "beebop" It makes me think of Jazz and I
think Rock & Roll would be more appropriate. Or maybe it's just me?

I suppose played bluegrass, rockabilly, 60s rock and roll sorta style....simple chords (as usual) :roll:

Interesting that we've just written songs about capn' Sully who was flying from LaGuardia, according to good ole wikipedia the story of the BH crash was displaced in the national news by an accident that occurred the same day in New York City, when American Airlines Flight 320 crashed during an instrument landing approach at LaGuardia Airport, killing 65.

Spookey eh?

Also, looking at all the rock 'stars' that died in light aircraft crashes, one has to see a moral in the story somewhere... :wink:
