I think you are doing what it takes to improve as a songwriter....Examining what works or doesn't work and not stopping at a road block but finding an alternative route.

Absolutely in agreement there. I've said it before, I'll say it again - the whole point of this forum is NOT to write a great song every week, it's to focus on songwriting for at least part of every week. It's to learn about songwriting - what works, what doesn't work. It's to practise songwriting - to make you think about what you're writing. It's to provide feedback on other people's songs - what you like, what doesn't appeal to you, what works and what doesn't.

What you're doing, Dylan, is exactly that - writing yourself, coming up with comments on other people's songs, and generally thinking more about the whole songwriting process. You come up with some good songs - and even when you don't, you come up with some interesting twists. The point is, you're thinking about your songs rather than just jotting down rhyming couplets....you're thinking about story (beginning, middle and end) and development; you're thinking about varying your song structure from week to week; you're THINKING about your writing, and that's a good thing.

As for this week; I think you've got about 75-80% of a good song here. It's a bit different, it's very....Dylan Barrett, it's a bit quirky, it's a very good effort. For me, it just needs finishing....maybe re-think a couple of lines here and there. Maybe make more of the velcro connection....

Keep 'em coming - and above all else, keep on thinking like you do - in your own individual style - about the songs you write.

:D :D :D

Vic

For encouragement's sake, I think your line of questioning and imagining the "what if's" is a great and an essential part of the songwriting process. :D
Maybe I should focus (forgive the pun) on his x-ray vision - I think that could fit the bill quite nicely!

Ok...I think I've learned that humorous writing isn't for me.... I mean, I can write a song about someone standing on a rake - which, unless it's yourself - is humorous, but I'd use it as a metaphor rather than inciting humor.

I look at my song and it starts off as a pretty good rock tune, and at the time seemed like a good idea - thinking about that iconic shot of Superman tearing open his shirt to reveal the 'S' underneath and I thought, who get's the job of sewing his buttons on..or does he just buy replacements - anyways, there were lot's of alternatives (although velcro didn't cross my mind  ).

I cringe when I look at the lyrics now, although some of the verses are pretty strong so maybe there's something that can be worked on and manipulated.

Maybe I should focus (forgive the pun) on his x-ray vision - I think that could fit the bill quite nicely!

Up up and away....

Rock on!
D 8)
