yeah, but even before it became a channel "TV land" was sort of a phrase sometimes used to talk about the imaginary world that TV brought to life (I believe it started as "Nick at Night" on the kid's channel Nickelodeon after the kids went to bed in the mid-80's and TV land was it's slogan, but became it's own network since the adults wanted more)

James, I like how you've been playing with your new software. my brother and I have been playing around on his mac and hope to have something post-able before too long (I mean stuff I write under assignments). I liked the somewhat chaotic, arcade like noises, and I didn't miss the brief MTV riff thrown in at an appropriate moment (nice touch). Been thinking about those days since hearing the news about Micheal Jackson - some of my earlier TV viewing memories are his videos.

Jeremy

EITHER.....cast your mind back to your early days of watching TV, and write about a particular series...
OR....cast your mind back, etc, and write about the experience of watching TV when you were little - how did it shape your perceptions, your view of the world, etc?
I was opting more for the the "OR" part of the assignment instead of writing about a particular series.....kind of like Bruce Springsteen's "57 Channels (and nothin' on"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5scpDev1qps
http://www.springsteenlyrics.com/lyrics/0/57channels.php
....It was interesting hearing his song again and how he got around the idea of listing tv shows by talking more about the purchase of a satellite dish then the actual shows. For your generation you mentioned having 2 to 3 channels....For my generation, it was the beginning of the overload period....cable TV, VCRs, video games...hours and hours and hours of TV usage
TV Land - isn't that a channel in the US that shows really, really, really old programmes?
Yes
(Side issue - didn't MTV used to stand for Music TeleVision? So - where'd the music go?)
Where indeed

Thanks again.

James

P.S. This week's assignment is throwing me for a bit of a loop to write a song about a song :? ....then again you did say radio not song....ok...time to put on the thinking cap and find an angle.

Hmmm, feeling my age here - when I was a kid, there were no lunchboxes, no Atari, no MTV - hell when I was a kid, we had two - count 'em, one, two - TV channels! We got a third channel when I was about ten - High Chapparal on a Monday night was the highpoint of the week! And as for colour TV - you Americans had it YEARS before us! My family got our first colour telly in 1974.....

TV Land - isn't that a channel in the US that shows really, really, really old programmes? I have vague memories of our last night in Texas in 2005, watching Gunsmoke (nostalgic sighhhhhh!) The Andy Griffith Show (Hey - isn't that Richie from happy days? You know, Ron Howard?) and a couple of other oldies - trying to stay awake till we had to leave for the airport at some ungodly hour like 3am.

You captured the nostalgic feeling of being a child of the TV generation OK, James - only thing I can find fault with is a lack of references to the coolest TV programmes to watch. You've evoked plenty of mental pictures with your imagery, but they're more like snapshots/frozen frames - but a few references to actual programmes would have brought the song more to life - like a video instead of a photo, I'd have mentally been replaying scenes from them in my head....

Love the last two lines, though..... great ending!

(Side issue - didn't MTV used to stand for Music TeleVision? So - where'd the music go?)

:D :D :D

Vic
