Thanks, Renee...I don't think they've changed very much at all from the original post; not that I don't listen to suggestions, but sometimes you just have to go with your gut feeling about a song. I did like Pbee's suggestion, but it just didn't sound right when I sang it.....and it took me almost two years to get the music right (open G, capoed at the third fret so the key's Bb, and throwing in an intro melody as welll....that was a lot of work!!!)

Anyway, the main page is at http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=225059 .....

:D :D :D

Vic

Backwards. Well done!

As for the syllables/line lengths in some places, I was mainly wondering about the firstborn baby girl line, but as you mentioned it already, I think it's gonna work out  Also I am very fond of the archaic language!

As to this line:
Her father's eyes and colouring, her mother's face so fair,
To me, it seems natural enough to keep "her father's" (instead of "my"); however, I was wondering if "colouring" and "fair" are not the same thing? Don't they both refer to the skin tone? I thought "colouring" felt a little awkward.. but that's just my personal, subjective opinion  Or does "colouring" refer to the baby's hair? That'd be nice, then. :D
Just my 2 cents.

I can almost hear this and am very curious to see how it turns out (oh my, a mandolin! :D ), so keep perservering!!
The music is going to turn out the way you want it in the end, I'm sure :D

Thank you for sharing and good luck with the music!
Cheers,
straycat.

wow, lot's of comments, so I don't think I'll read through all of them, forgive me if I repeat anything.

The first was the line "oft times I thought I'd freeze" - I think you should make the freeze more of an antagonist - "struggling against the freeze" or something like that.. think pbee had the right idea in "face against the breeze", except freeze is stronger than breeze.
A year has passed since that bless'd day, I saw my child and wife,
I've never roamed the seas again, or gone back to that life,
On Solstice day this year of '83 was born a boy,
My life could not be more complete, nor more filled with joy.

I think this could be reworked, especially the line "On Solstice day this year of '83 was born a boy," feels awkward to me, and also maybe pinning the song down to a particular year will lose some of the feeling that this song could be more timeless. The other thing is putting it into a more definite resolve
"I'll never roam the seas again, or go back to that life,
a year has passed since that blessed day, I saw my child and wife.
and this year, on solstice day, was born a baby boy
my life could not be more complete, nor more filled with joy."

contagiousjerm

I guess I would want to hear more of how the decision came about instead of just assumed

Well the narrator/protagonist has come back from sea with his "purse filled with silver and gold" - I suppose I'm guilty of assuming here that the reader's going to take for granted that he's got enough money to settle down and raise a family, and once he sees he's a father - remember, he left for sea a week after the wedding! - his heart's been irrevocably captured and he never wants to leave home again.

BTW, I'm guessing here that the reader will think "83? Hmm....definitely not 1983.....maybe 1883, but the language is more archaic/arcane than that - maybe 1773?" Like I said, I'm hoping for a REALLY old-fashioned feel to this one - at least a couple of centuries worth of old-fashioned! Some English folk bands did this really well back in the 60's and early 70's - I'm still trying to write songs that'll pique someone's interest, never mind trying to write a classic folk song at the first time of asking!

A secondary consideration is the length of the song - if I have to add an extra verse, maybe in the interests of clarification, it's going to be about 8 minutes long. I was hoping from the original draft to make it about 4.5 mins, maybe 5 mins tops - but with the instrumental linking pieces between verses, it's already running at over 6 mins, and I'm thinking that's a bit too long.

I have to admit, I may have been a little too ambitious with this one - reaching a little too far. BUT - if you don't set your sights a little higher, you're never going to get your feet off the ground....right?

I'm struggling more than a little with the music - but nothing worthwhile ever came easily, did it? So I'll keep struggling till I get the music I want.....it's a hard life, and I don't HAVE to do this for a living! I will persist, and I WILL get it right in the end - one way or another!

Back to the drawing board - and the guitar. I was going to have an early night - and it's now 4am!!!!!

:D :D :D

Vic
