Informal drag races can be started by any means, including flag-waving and arm-dropping. These methods are more likely to be seen in an un-professional setting, being most popular with illegal street racing. Professional drag races are started electronically, with a series of vertically-arranged lights known as a "Christmas tree" or just "tree". A "Christmas tree" consists of a column of lights for each driver/lane. In each column, the top two lights are small amber lights connected to light beams on the track, which when broken by the vehicle's front tire(s) indicate that the driver has pre-staged (approximately 7 inches (180 mm) from the starting line) and then staged (at the starting line).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drag_racing

another suggestion:

When the walls are cracked
And the bottles breaking (Oh)
'CAUSE you ask her out
but she's already taken

I'm really not sure what this means, maybe you could expand on the emotions that are being paralleled here like the adrenalin rush when she asks you out being similar to the racing. Like James says something to tie the two together.
Just my opinion of course the song still works as it is, good stuff.

Cheers
Paul

I don't know why, but on the read through, I kept hearing that Bo Diddley riff like in "Who Do You Love?"

Suggestion:
It was a bit of a jolt going between the first section to the second. Consider clarifying a tie-in. For example, set up that it's one guy and he's a street racer from the beginning of the song....but it's interesting that you wrote in second person addressing the listener as "you"....I think the "you" adds a nice dimension to the lyrics.

Thanks for sharing.

James
