Definitely - my default settings, basically, are 60's pop, folk-rock & soul, 70's rock and a little bit of 80's hair metal thrown in. What I enjoy about your writing is that, like Arjen (Ignar Hillstrom on these forums) you're not afraid to experiment, you'll try ANY genre, and you're always ready to try something new. It might not always (IMHO) work 100%, but it's always....interesting. How many bands can you say that about these days? Not many, is the answer to that one.

IMO, you're a very accomplished songwriter/musician - and it's not like you even served an apprenticeship, you served up good lyrics and music from day one! - most of us had to go the process of writing garbage for the first few months or so till we got some good advice from our fellow would-be songwriters.

I think you've actually outgrown the SSG - you don't need these weekly suggestions to write songs, you just need to focus on what YOU want to write about. Having said that, I hope you won't leave us, because your critiques are thoughtful, insightful and usually spot on. I've changed many a weak line in my own songs at your suggestions, you're a very valuable contributor to this forum, and I know several other people have taken your suggestions on board as well.

So - keep on doing what you do, "Keep on keepin' on" as they say - and thanks for all your insights over the last few years. I'd be willing to bet REAL money I'm not the only one who thinks that way!

As Dylan used to say, "Rock On!"

8) 8) 8)

Vic

I did glean enough from said trailer, though, to understand what you were writing about.

It's always interesting to read your lyrics, James, and try and guess what kind of music you're going to put with them. Sometimes I'm close, sometimes not - this was one of the latter times. I had a sneaking feeling you were going to go dark and gothic, maybe even heavy metal - but you seemed to capture the mood OK.

As always, very interesting....well put together, especially at short notice. I'm ok with that. Gamers need their songs too!....Regarding upbeat music....yes that happy Samurai is hard to keep melancholy
I enjoyed it in a rather cheerily nostalgic way (maybe I need a change of hobby emphasis ... more guitar practice and less hacking and slahing??..  )
This verse looked a bit out of place, but then I am not familiar with the story
I was hoping the link would help clarify the reference, because it's a crux or motivation of the story.

John Constantine always saw half breed angels and demons but no one else around him did, he thought he was crazy and was tormented by the visions and sounds to the point he tried to commit suicide, but he was resuscitated.

Some religious views hold that suicide victims are destined for Hell. With this in mind, he tries to cast demons back to Hell to win favor with God so that at the end of his life, God might weigh his "good" deeds more than his "bad" deeds and let him into Heaven.

So the take is this is a normal guy (John Constantine), but one who sees the spirit world

The singer is a regular person trying to figure Constantine out and saying basically, "Yes, I believe there is a spirit world, but I don't want to see it or make it too real in my life".

It just sounds wrong without it.
Agreed
****Poof  "The" inserted***

Thanks again :D

James

It seems that Constantine was both a movie and a video game, with the usual requirement to slay an endless procession of evil hell-spawned foes. Having played a great many such games over the years (I'm currently dispatching my fair share of 'shades' 'rock wraiths', 'profanes' etc in Dragon Age 2) I did get a smile out of all the references. :) I'm not entirely sure that non gamers would pick it all up, especially as the music is rather upbeat for the subject, but that's for others to say.
