For example, it sounds like you're playing this with a capo on the fourth fret, using Am, G and D as your initial chords. Your first line seems to follow this melody (and I'm using the capo as "0" fret for reference):

There (open D)
are (open G)
times (second fret G)
I (open G)
don't (second fret G)
want (open B)
to (open B)
re - (second fret G)
mem - (open G)
ber (open D)

Simply playing that on a separate track will help your voice to focus on the target notes of the melody. You could, with practice, make those notes the pinch notes of your fingerpicking as well.

I'd suggest try playing melodies of other's songs to get in the practice of playing melodies on guitar, then applying the techniques to your own songs.
