Looking good so far Jay; the way the chorus is written, though, I'd have to hear it. seems like it could be quite awkward to sing - I can't quite get a handle on the rhythm of it.

And as for following the assignment....well, you gotta go where the muse takes you!

It looks like you have the basic idea that people are rushing through life without taking time to reflect or connect with others.

Suggestion:
Consider more details...Who, what, why, where, when, how questions....they could be about the singer or about the people walking by, or about the person the singer is building up courage to talk to, or about the person is running from and avoiding talking to...

....or the title reminds me of the Alcoholics Anonymous slogan...."One day at a time"...so it could be about over coming a challenge or difficulty and taking things one day at a time.

And then... I kinda just started playing chords, and got something that sounded musically much better, inspired by walks down to a local bay :) I think this is my favourite out of everything I've written, I'm not entirely sure why, it is really brief too. I have a feeling it'll take a while to get perfect. So here you go (this time Mp3 included):
