He flatly refused to let his small son have the toy that he'd chosen in a shop - because it was green, and that's Celtic's colour.... He meant it too - and all for a football team on the other side of the world....bizarre.

Ah, I should probably point out that the Celtic/Rangers rivalry is about more than just football - there are sectarian issues as well. Celtic are predominantly a Catholic club, while Rangers are mainly Protestant - so families aren't split down the middle like they are in Liverpool! There was a time when Catholics couldn't play for Rangers, nor Protestants for Celtic. I believe at one time, too, Celtic allowed Catholic Priests into the ground for free. It's a little more relaxed now, but some old entrenched attitudes die hard.

:D :D :D

Vic

Good one. I made the big leap across recently, but my iMac is all sealed up, so I can't get in and muck around, which feels kind of odd. I keep a Windows box going too (with the sides permanently off for messing around purposes) so that I can still run all the old games and stuff (did I say games? - must have meant serious work software....) and do various jobs that I haven't quite got the Mac programs, or the knowledge, for yet. Beautiful machine the iMac - I just upgraded to iLife09 yesterday, so I now have the option to buy a Garage Band based video lesson with Nora Jones showing me how to play one of her songs on piano, and some from Sting on guitar. I shall have to re-think my anti-credit card bias and figure out a way to try one out....

Deciding whether it's worth replacing those bits or saving for a new one. My interface is no longer compatible with my music computer (which works fine, the incompatibility is partly my fault) so I donated it to the Lasleys when they came t jam in the hope it finds a home somewhere stateside. But I'll be recording tons in a few weeks time. :)

So I have no excuse in that regard.

What's the problem with the computer sound? Is it a laptop or a bigger box? Shame about the distance, because I've got a drawer full of pensioned off motherboards, sound cards, and general bits for Windows machines. I've even got a spare machine that I can't even give away now, but which would be fine for music and writing. I couldn't post a whole machine, but a part might work (unless it's a laptop). Still, then there'd be all the business of fitting it.... maybe that's not such a good idea...

Anyway, good luck with squeezing the necessary out of the government.

Cheers,

Chris

Hey Chris,

Thanks for the response.

I should point out that Liverpool-Everton rivalry is very friendly, but we do have lines and they do sometimes get crossed. Like when I was teaching my three Liverpool-supporting nephews some anti-Everton jokes, and their mum (my sis, and a big Everton fan) was driving the car, pulled over and told me (only half-joking) that if I persisted I'd be walking home. The boys loved hearing her telling someone else off for a change tho!

As for recording, on this one I got the music sorted just fine, I did the two simultaneously (doesn't always work out like that, but I got lucky). The problem I'm having at the moment (besides being a crap singer) is not having an interface through which to record anything. I wont be able to record guitar or vox for around a month :( But, in general, I think if you e.g. had music for the verses but not for the choruses, posting the music you do have, or a brief "discussing ideas" mp3 would work. If the song is near completion (or good enough to do a full run through with some mistakes) then I'd likely go for the warts-and-all approach.

It's an interesting point though. I've said it before, although I'm guilty of posting lyrics-only right now, in general I find it much easier to critique a piece when I can hear it being performed, no matter how scratchy that recording might be. I take the time to listen to and comment on as many of the submissions as I can, and benefit as much from doing that as I do from reading the comments about my own stuff. But when I see a lyrics-only submission, I do find it hard to comment fairly (one of many reasons I'm desperate to get that interface sorted out!). And I say all that in my present situation where the internet-computer wont play sound, so in order to comment, I'm having to download the track, transfer it to the other computer, listen there, then come back and post my comments. Even with that added hassle, I'm more likely to leave comment on a song that has a recording than one that doesn't.*

* Of course, that doesn't mean you should all ignore my next 3-4 submissions.......I'd post moosic if I could, just gotta sort the logistics of getting cash from government, not easy.

Thanks to Vic and Scrybe for the explanations.

I clearly had it all wrong about Liverpool and Everton rivalry. My template for that sort of thing comes partly from a friend telling me about her son in law who is a rabid Rangers fan. He flatly refused to let his small son have the toy that he'd chosen in a shop - because it was green, and that's Celtic's colour.... He meant it too - and all for a football team on the other side of the world....bizarre.

We have two AFL footie teams in Perth too - known as the Eagles and the Dockers. It's common to see bumper stickers saying "I support two teams - The Dockers, and whoever is playing the Eagles this week" or vice versa. But I guess most fans aren't quite so one-eyed about it. Good to hear that the rivalry between the two Liverpool teams is generally pretty friendly.

Very sad tale all round. I can understand the "Judas jailed" reference now, and it seems appropriate for the song. But I'm glad that I wasn't trying to make decisions on the spot on that day. Violence at matches was a major problem, and it must have been hard for the coppers on the spot to get a clear picture of what was really going on. That sort of disaster usually seems to be a mixture of a chain of bad circumstances and poor decisions. Still, if you need a villain in a folk style song, the coppers are quite a traditional candidate for the role.

Sara, if you're having trouble getting the recording together, is there any chance that you could post just some of it - i.e. a few bars of the music alone? One of the things that I find frustrating about this process is that it's easy to comment on each other's lyrics, but harder to do the same with the all important music, singing and general delivery. I got my lyrics done on Sunday, but I'm going round in circles trying to get the music and singing working, and I'm struggling to think of a way of presenting where I'm up to. Any ideas on how you (or I) might present a 'work in progress' from a musical perspective? Maybe an mp3 that includes chat along the lines of "I'm trying this strumming...... this progression.... this phrasing... and am trying to get XYZ feel .... any suggestions or comments from others??"

Or is it better to go for a full take, and live with the lumps and bumps??

Cheers,

Chris
