Also your nails are made up of layers of keratin — a protein that's also found in your hair and skin. Plenty of protein is also good for maintaining healthy strong nails, I'm sure there must be vitamin suppliments available that promotes healthy nails.

Also avoiding soaking your hands for long periods of time ie: washing up or having a bath that can soften up and weaken your nails.

You can try a nail hardener, but avoid products containing toluene sulfonamide or formaldehyde. These chemicals can cause redness or irritate the skin, and thats not a good idea for guitar players is it now.

-Pet

Hey Guys,

I am actually blessed with fairly strong nails and I have never used fake nails, I have just seen the consequences of them before from people I know. I would strongly recommend not getting fake nails. When they are applied proffessionally, they file down your nail. I don't mean file to make shorter, I mean to make thinner and then glue the fake nail into place over the thin nail remaining. Then when the nails start to grow out, girls usually go back and have the new part filled. I don't recommend it because it leaves your natural nails in worse state than they are. The press on home type ones, as Portia says, do the same thing but you don't file down your current nail. Fake nails can lead to infections and fungus, especially the home applied ones. If and when you decide to stop using fake nails and can take awhile before your nails go back to normal. I think you are better off just trying to strengthen them.
Instead of using the enamel nail strengthener stuff or whatever it is, try clear nail polish. It is not as strong as the other stuff but still helps. I read once that buffing your nails can make them stronger because it gets more blood circulation to your nails, maybe try massaging them and lotioning them. Vic -maybe your left hand nails are stronger because they get manicured more regularly?

I just found this and it is from CNN
http://www.cnn.com/HEALTH/library/WO/00020.html

hope this helped
