Hello everyone,

I am having a little problem. my buddies and I have pulled a Ibanez EXB404 out of retirement. We plug it into the bass amp, and [glow=red,2,300]shazzam[/glow] :o.... nothing.
The volume is all the way up, the amp works... but nothing comes out. We pulled the Bass apart, all the wiring looks good, the pickup wiring looks good. We can't figure out what is wrong with it. Tonight we are going to take a voltage meter to it, and check to see if anything is fried.
If anyone has any ideas as to what the problem might be, please post them.

Thank you ahead of time,

Adam

Sounds like ther is probably a problem with the wiring somewhere, try re-soldering everything, and if it doesn't work then, maybe one of the parts has burnt out or something?

You're sure the cord is good?

Alright, maybe I should clarify a few things.... yes, all the cords work, yes the amp is plugged in and is working, and yes the bass is plugged into the amp. ;)

Alright, tonight we took the bass apart, and found that one wire running from one of the volume pots to the neck pickup was disconnected, so we re-soldered that, and [glow=red,2,300]SHAZZAM[/glow]... again, nothing happened. So then we took out the voltage meter and checked all the wires to make sure that the connection was still good, and they were. The only thing that we haven't check is the connection from the volume pots to the pickups themselves. That is for another evening.
Has anyone had a similar experience? The bass has been  sitting in storage for the past 4 years, and when we took it out, we had a heck of a time turning the pots... could that have something to do with it? Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Adam

Ah, it sounds like the pots have rusted up or something.  You probably need new ones, just check what rating they are (250k or 500k, probably. It will say on the back of the pots)

Just a thought, is it an active bass?

With rusted pots, would the power still get through them?
The pots are rated at 500k, and I have no clue whether it is an active bass or not.

With the rusted pots it almost certainly wont work.

An Active bass needs a battery in it to power the pickups. If its active there should be a space for a battery (usually a 9 volt square one).

If it is active, I imagine you would have noticed the battery before now, but I know a guy who almost bought a new bass because the battery was flat and he didn't realise it even had a battery.

Just a thought....

If you go to the Ibanez website, they have wiring diagrams for all of their instruments theyve ever made. It might come in handy.

Well, after swapping out the pots, and it still not working, we wired a pickup directly to the output jack.... and [glow=red,2,300]SHAZZAM[/glow] it worked.... By the process of elimination, we figured out that the jack was shorting the patchcord. We had a spare jack kicking around, so we soldered it in, plug her in, and it worked.

Thanks to everyone who contributed, it is greatly appreciated. :)
