hi all

from my less than 3 years experience, there's a few things that could be taken for sure:

a) guitar is difficult to learn so you need to play it a lot;
b) a regular daily pratice, playing a schedule of excercises (taken forma book or given you by a teacher) helps you a lot your learning process;
c) frequent metronome sessions are extremly helpful (that's somethig I've always knew in theory but started to do only in the last year or so);
d) playing with other people teaches you a lot
e) you'd probably need a good teacher to reach real high level

Having said so what is really important is to have fun and passion because only passion for guitar gives you the boost to overcome the difficulties you'll find in learning process.

My first year with guitar was completely frustrating because i did not follow any of the above mentioned steps: i tought I was not able to play even the simplest song in the world! Only when i got an instructional book with cd I started to learn the basis of teh rhythm and started to play real songs

Now i'm into metal guitar and i'm starting a band as rhythm guitarist: a nice progress from 2 years ago, ain't it?

How many hours did I play? let's say 1.500 from 2.000 but i'm far from ebing a real good guitarist

Four years ago, after I realised you didn't need to be a super hero to play open chords, I decided that I was going to be good. As a rough 'deadline' I decided on july 31, 2013. By then I've been going for ten years, and with daily practice I think I can expect to have learned enough to make my own tunes properly. I'll be halfway next year and it seems to be a proper guess. I've probably spend about 2500 hours on it but that's all divided between piano, guitar, bass, composition, theory, production etc, so I'm still kinda mediocre in every aspect. But give me six more years and we'll see. :D

I don't thoink hours work as well as years because you need a certain time to think and let things sink in to progress, apart from hours walking scales. Practicing 20 hours a day won't make you improve foru times as fast as someone practicing five hours a day.

I've played for 3 years (give or take a few weeks), and practice around 3 hours a day (give or take a few hours for those off days :lol: ) so I reckon I've clocked up about 3000 hours so far (if I have my math right!) and only recently have I begun to feel as though I can play the *guitar* as an instrument, and not just copy and repeat what I've heard/read in TABS.

To me, the guitar is a life-long instrument; There will always be something that you get stuck on, and in fact, its the fun that comes from taking on and overcoming these challenges that make it worthwhile.

There are lots of good teachers out there, Neztok. It probably won't take more than three tries to find one :)
