This is an earnest question, but what can/will a professional do to a basic acoustic to make it better? I strung it using recommended strings and followed a online tutorial, then tuned it using an electronic tuner.

Right now I am trying to learn "House Of The Rising Sun" in the Beginners Song section, but i cant hold the strings down for long at all.

Thats actually a very good question but as other have said a pro can make changes that will bring the height of the strings closer to the fretboard and make it easier to play.

I have a guitar (Montana) that was cheaper than yours. It was incredibly tough to play so I took it back to my shop. They had purchased a plek machine with does kind of the same thing as a pro would do but its automated. That Montana became my favorite to play. I have since plek'd all my guitars.. and they all play really well. I still love my Montana more (That part I cant explain) but what others have said is true. It is probably just a case of you needing your guitar set up and I would suggest letting a pro do it the first time.

Spend $40 at the shop for your own sake. It may get you over the hump as far as not quitting again.

Hey everyone, just a little update. I took my Sonata up to a local luthier(?) and asked if they could help me out with the action. He did filing and tweaking and other stuff to it, and voila, the action is soooooo much better. I still can't play the simplest of songs yet, but atleast I know its not my guitar holding me back now. :)
