I'm 20 and recently renewed my love/interest in music since i was about 12. i became interested in possibly playing guitar and my friend had a fender squier strat sitting in storage so im in the process of trying to learn how to play(i dont have any musical background so it could be rough). I've had it for about a week now and i want more effects in the music that it produces. I've messed with the settings and nothing has really made me real happy. Anyways im a grunge fanatic (When I was 8 I was blasting nirvana and soundgarden while most of my guy friends listened to country and punk-pop/alternative(stuff like green day & bush). Well, im missing all the distortion, so I was curious if anyone could recommend a distortion/effects pedal that would work. I just started so nothing too expensive, but something that gets the job done. My favorite bands are screaming trees, nirvana, soundgarden, and pearl jam so anything that could produce similar sounds to those bands. I also like the older music (i think ppl call it "wah" sounding -> i could be wrong this is jsut a word ive seen in the last week while looking up stuff). Just letting you know the kind of sound i like that way you could help me find a suitable pedal.

I know some of you probably think it would be dumb to buy a pedal so early when learning, but this is the music "im into" and i wouldn't really want to play anything besides "80s hairmetal" and/or "grunge", at least not at this point in my life.

Now the 2nd question. I have X-mas break from college in a week and a half and will have nothing to do for 3-4 weeks so i was planning on going hardcore on how to learn in this time since i would be able to play 4-5 hours+ a day. So I was curious if anyone thought any particular book or video might help my progress learn techniques such as palm muting, hammer ons, pull offs, and how to put it all together to create "solos". I know solos are alot of speed, but the combination of techniques used to create them such as bending, pulling on, etc. are just mind bongling how u would toss it all together to make cool sounds. Another area im interested in is riffs. Im a riff kinda guy so anything that would help me learn what goes with what really well would be appreciated very much. I had a friend tell me i needed to learn the scales, but from the internet alone so far i have found all the things too difficult to really understand well such as the whole steps + half steps and the "#" symbol besides letters...ya very confusing for me. Anyways thanks for any help

plz im a noob

I've got a Zoom 505II that's relatively inexpensive but has a fairly full palette of sounds. I'd recommend you take a look at it. It's given me a lot of versatility with the little band I've been playing with. They run around US$ 90.

Buying a pedal is fine, just try not to use it very often. When starting out it's better to play cleaner tones so you can hear the notes without all the coloration and distortion. Plus, distortion helps to hide bad technique. All those string squeaks, buzzing, clicking sounds, ect get burried under all the extra noises. It's better to start right than learn the wrong way and have to change later.

Try the digitech grunge pedal... You can hear soundclips Here you will need the "real audio player" to hear em. Nice remake of DOD's old pedal... Not a bad price either

The link for the soundbytes are about half way down the page

Check out the Digitech pedal samples on this page. I like the Bad Monkey, which is a bit of a Tube Screamer copy, but you might be more interested in the Hot Head or Grunge. These aren't bad pedal's for $40.
A Boss ds-1 will give you plenty of distortion for about the same price, as well, and would probably have better resale value when you get sick of it.
An amp modeller, like the Behringer v-amp($100) of x-vamp ($80) will give you a variety of distortion types that would be great for headphone practice or basic recording.

I've been using the Metal Method DVDs to teach myself to play. They're the best set I've tried so far.

If you're just after the grunge distortion, just grab the Boss DS1. When you want other effects/models, look at what Zoom, Digitech and Behringer have to offer.

If I remember correctly, Cobain actually used the Boss DS-1 pedal anyway.

I've got one and I love it.
