Open G chord - Pinky or ring finger on high E

I have been playing for a little over a year using my ring finger on the high E string when playing the open G. Over the last week or so I've attempted to change my fingering to use the pinky with the thinking that it would be easier to change to C chord.Is this a waste of time and effort or will it pay of in the long run.Wayne
