Recently my electric guitar (a fender squier) has stopped working. I was just wondering whether it i worth trying to get the guitar repaired or just buy a new. The Yamaha Pacifica seems particularly enticing.
It's up to you. IIRC, aren't they about the same anyway? Price/quality wise?
Welcome to GN. If you find you want to fix it, we have a section called "Guitar Repair and Maintenance". Some great folks there can help you along.
In my opinion if u have enough money upgrade if not repair. Dont buy yamaha they arent as good as other copys
There is absoluely nothing wrong with the Pacifica. When I bought mine I tried several other guitars in the price range, including Squiers, but it was the Pacifica I kept going back to. It felt comfortable and sounded great and you can't argue with the build quality. You may find different but the Pacifica is a very underrated guitar IMHO. Particularly if you are a beginner. (Like me).
At the end of the day you need to try a number of guitars out and find what's best for you.
+1 for the Yamaha.
Having said that I would investigate the cause of the problem with your current guitar before splashing out. It may be something simple like a loose wire on the jack socket.

I've had a lot of sobering thoughts in my time.
It was them that turned me to drink.
Yamaha makes very good musical instruments.
Yep, it is most likely that your instument jack is not making good contact, or a wire came loose. Little solder and you are all fixed.
But that doesn't mean you still can't get the Yammy. :D
If you know something better than Rock and Roll, I'd like to hear it - Jerry Lee Lewis
brand names matter very little in that range, you can find dogs and keepers. play before you buy pay more attention to feel and tone then the name on the headstock.
if it just quit suddenly then the odds are it is something fixable for less than the cost of a new one. how did it play before it quit?
sounds like a bad input or maybe even a cord problem?

I've came to the conclusion that I just want a new guitar and I'm looking for excuses not to feel guilty about buying it when the other could be fixed. I was messing around with one at a friends house and really liked it, so I'm gonna get one anyway.
I do appreciate the advice though and will bear it in mind in the future.
I think the answer is in the quality of the guitar. My 93 Squier was made in Japan and plays better then most USA models. I've upgraded most parts on it and it plays every bit as nice as my USA Jackson Soloist.
Where was it made? Do you like the feel of it? What quit working, the pickups? Pickups aren't that much and are easy enough to install, heck you could e-bay a whole new pickgaurd preloaded with pickups for cheap.
