I would get so annoyed if I got ONE scratch on my Ibanez...I would take it in to get repaired that day and if the shop was closed I would fetch the owner and make him open it up to fix it for me. Then I wouldn't pay him while telling him he doesn't deserve to working on these things. What if it was an emergency and he wasn't there?!! And I'd slam the door on my way out making sure any glass on it shatters and laugh as I walk off with my demon safe in its case. I'd spit on his car everytime he comes past and empty the fire extinguishers of his appartement all over his windows and car! muuuuuuhahahahahahaaaaa...hmm...ahem...I'm done.

My guitar instructor bought a Breedlove last summer, but it's got two blemishes on it that are a natural part of the wood, so he's having them put a brand new top on it. It just bothers him immensely. Meanwhile, I pointed out how my strumming has worn away all the finsih below the sound hole on my Seagull. He said, "Yeah, but that's cool."

So I guess scratches are cool on some else's guitar. On yours, they're a disaster.

For me, if a guitar is brand new and arrives at your doorstep with scratches, I'd get it fixed.

I have an old Fylde that has got a bunch of dings, but they are cool.

On any guitar, the only scratch that isn't cool is the first one.

I wish the same held true for my car. :(

Yeah well, people have different tastes. I couldn't stand a single scratch on my geet. As for my skateboard...man...I love screwing that thing up...smashing it all over the place...no matter how cool the design on the deck is...the first thing I do is a trick that can really annoy your board. I'm going off point again...I'll shut up now...

Yes, it has to be on the Internet, but it's very easy to do. Just go to Photobucket and sign up. It's completely free. Once you have an account just upload the pic from your computer to Photobucket. Once the pic is uploaded they will give you several types of links so you can show it on a site like this.

Photobucket

This is how I put my pic in my avatar.

Here's a cool pic of one of my guitar heros Marc Bolan of T Rex. To post this I just highlighted and copied the link labeled "URL" at Photobucket. Then I clicked on "Img" above the post box here at GuitarNoise. Then paste the copied URL address. Viola! Always click Preview to see if it took.

Back to the topic:
Dude! If this is the first scratch on your guitar, OFCOURSE you'll feel bad for IT! But you'll get millions of scratches on it over the years! The next time you'll get a ding in your guitar you wont feel as bad!

People always ask me why I have only been buying black electrics lately. The answer is automotive touch up bottles. 1983 Chevy black seems to work best. Concept works for most solid color guitars but harder to match. As long as you don't mind the stares when you walk into the auto shop with your guitar it is easy to match from the chart. I guess if you are shy you could steal the chart

My acoustics I like natural so there is basically no touch up needed.

Well, that is a little more than a scratch so I can see why it is bothering you. Since it is pretty much a solid color (I think I see some metal flake in it) it should be relatively easy to at least make it less visible.

So, the bottom line is you need to find as close a color as possible then

1) get any loose paint around the edges off with something like a toothpick
2) rough up the primer a little but don't go through it to the wood.
3) put the color on a little at a time until it builds up as close as possible to level letting it dry between coats. Try to not build up the old edges until the center is higher.
4) sand it in lightly with some 1000 grit wet and dry sandpaper.
5) put another coat on if necessary. let it dry
6) light sand it with 1600 grit W&D paper.
7) polish it using a damp cloth and white polishing compound followed by a good guitar polish.

This may not be perfect but it will look much better.

OR, you can just take it to a repair shop and let them do it.

Do what Nils said and then put a sticker over it like something about your guitar or your fav band

but do something that's a nice coloured axe

by covering it after you tried to repir it will actually help the paint work by not allowing any more to come loose

that's what I have found

cheers
