Sounds like we need to know the tab or at least the song (so we can hear what's going on and know if it's a mute strum or pick scraping). If you want to try the original suggestion use a quarter on the high e and see if that gives the sound you are looking for, or use a thick pick and do something to rough up the edge a bit.
