First of all, just registered and absolutely love this sight, has so much great knowledge. Now, I've learned some good ole basic country chords and seems that Johnny Cash's songs are very basic, but fantastic at the same time. Well, I cant figure out how to strum songs that have his "western swing" or alternating bass rythyms, if thats even how you would describe them. Mainly I want to play folsom prison blues and boy named sue and so on. Could someone give me some tips on how to strum such wonderful tunes?

Go to the Easy Song Database, and look for Folsum Prison Blues.
Our esteemed expert Wes Inman has put a very accurate tab on there.
Be ready for lots of palm muting though to get that boom-chucka sound.
Great musical tastes by the way, you can't beat a bit of Mr Cash

Henry Garza, Saul Hudson, and Darrell Abbott could not be here tonight, but they all had sex and are proud to announce the birth of their two-headed baby, Rodya S. Thompson.

Yup, as far as I am concerned, if you are a theory man, Noteboat is THE man.
But for people like me that don't know a dinished major thingy whingy whatsit from a lampost, Wes is just an amazing help in all things guitar related. He gets you playing. Theory just gets me reaching for the Rizla's...
Much respect.

If you like John Cash you should check out Merle Haggard, most of his songs are 2 or 3 chords and basic bass strum patterns.

check out david hodge's article about "hurt." Really simple to play, but powerful at the same time.

The song is suppose to be done with an alternate bass note pick and strum... which is not easy to learn if it don't come natural. So I would suggest a simple pluck root note and strun
