Paranoid - Black Sabbath

OK, this time let's have a little fun with some loud classic rock!

When this came out in 1970, all I'd heard till then was pop music really - some good, some
not so good - I'd never heard anything like this before! I didn't even know what "progressive
rock" was! I'd never heard anything sounding quite like this before - the distorted guitars,
the manic-depressive vocals, I loved it straight away! Wasn't long after this I found Radio
Luxembourg, and started listening to "Kid Jensen's Dimensions" late at night...

Rock songs don't come much easier than this - four powerchords, two hammer-ons and not even
much movenment up and down the neck....

Intro.

This is a simple little riff....

E5
D-14-14-14-------12h14-------12h14--|
A-14-14-14-12h14-------12h14--------|
E-12-12-12--------------------------|

Repeated three times - after the first repeat, the drums and bass kick in - after the 3rd
repetition, straight into the verses....

Verse One.

The main riff, over which Ozzy sings, is played like this.....

E5
D-14-14-14-14-|-14-14-14-14-|-14-14-14-14-|-14-14-14-14-|
A-14-14-14-14-|-14-14-14-14-|-14-14-14-14-|-14-14-14-14-|
E-12-12-12-12-|-12-12-12-12-|-12-12-12-12-|-12-12-12-12-|

D5 G5 D5 E5
G-------------|-------------|-12---------|
D-12-12-12-12-|-12-12-12-12-|-12-12---14-|
A-10-10-10-10-|-10-10-10-10-|-10-12---14-|
E-10-10-10-10-|-10-10-10-10-|----10---12-|

(E5)Finished with my woman 'cause she (D5)couldn't help me (G5)with (D5)my (E5)mind,
(E5)People think I'm insane because (D5)I am frowning (G5)all (D5)the (E5)time,

Here there's another riff......

E5 C5
D-14----------|-14----------|-10----------|
A-14----------|-14----------|-10----------|
E-12----------|-12----------|-8-----------|

D5 E5
D-12----------|-14-14-14-14-|-14-14-14-14-|-14-14-14-14-|-14-14-14-14-|
A-12----------|-14-14-14-14-|-14-14-14-14-|-14-14-14-14-|-14-14-14-14-|
E-10----------|-12-12-12-12-|-12-12-12-12-|-12-12-12-12-|-12-12-12-12-|

repeat that once, then into the second verse...done exactly the same as the first...

(E5)All day long I think of things but (D5)nothing seems to (G5)sa(D5)tis(E5)fy,
(E5)Think I'll lose my mind if I don't (D5)find something to (G5)pa(D5)ci(E5)fy,

and then straight into the bridge........

Can you help me,
E5
D-14----------|------------|------------|------------|
A-14----------|------------|------------|------------|
E-12----------|------------|------------|------------|

Occupy my brain?
D5
D-12----------|------------|------------|------------|
A-12----------|------------|------------|------------|
E-10----------|------------|------------|------------|

Oh, oh,

E5
D-14----------|------------|------------|------------|
A-14----------|------------|------------|------------|
E-12----------|------------|------------|------------|

yeah!
D5
D-12----------|------------|------------|------------|
A-12----------|------------|------------|------------|
E-10----------|------------|------------|------------|

Following this is the main riff:

E5
D-14-14-14-14-|-14-14-14-14-|-14-14-14-14-|-14-14-14-14-|
A-14-14-14-14-|-14-14-14-14-|-14-14-14-14-|-14-14-14-14-|
E-12-12-12-12-|-12-12-12-12-|-12-12-12-12-|-12-12-12-12-|

D5 G5 D5 E5
G-------------|-------------|-12---------|
D-12-12-12-12-|-12-12-12-12-|-12-12---14-|
A-10-10-10-10-|-10-10-10-10-|-10-12---14-|
E-10-10-10-10-|-10-10-10-10-|----10---12-|

repeated once, then the third verse....played exactly as the first two....

(E5)I need someone to show me the (D5)things in life that (G5)I (D5)can't (E5)find,
(E5)I can't see the things that make true (D5)happiness, I (G5)must (D5)be (E5)blind.

Then into the solo - while the lead guitar is playing, the main riff is played four
times, then a further twice, then straight into the next verse....yes, you guessed
it, played exactly the same as the first three.....

(E5)Make a joke and I will sigh and (D5)you will laugh and (G5)I (D5)will (E5)cry,
(E5)Happiness I cannot feel and (D5)love to me is (G5)so (D5)un(E5)real.

Then this riff is repeated twice:

E5 C5
D-14----------|-14----------|-10----------|
A-14----------|-14----------|-10----------|
E-12----------|-12----------|-8-----------|

D5 E5
D-12----------|-14-14-14-14-|-14-14-14-14-|-14-14-14-14-|-14-14-14-14-|
A-12----------|-14-14-14-14-|-14-14-14-14-|-14-14-14-14-|-14-14-14-14-|
E-10----------|-12-12-12-12-|-12-12-12-12-|-12-12-12-12-|-12-12-12-12-|

Then the fifth and final verse - wanna take a wild guess as to how it's played?

(E5)And so as you hear these words tell(D5)ing you now (G5)of (D5)my (E5)state,
(E5)I tell you to enjoy life I (D5)wish I could but (G5)it's (D5)too (E5)late!

Outro is just the main riff again:

E5
D-14-14-14-14-|-14-14-14-14-|-14-14-14-14-|-14-14-14-14-|
A-14-14-14-14-|-14-14-14-14-|-14-14-14-14-|-14-14-14-14-|
E-12-12-12-12-|-12-12-12-12-|-12-12-12-12-|-12-12-12-12-|

D5 G5 D5 E5
G-------------|-------------|-12---------|
D-12-12-12-12-|-12-12-12-12-|-12-12---14-|
A-10-10-10-10-|-10-10-10-10-|-10-12---14-|
E-10-10-10-10-|-10-10-10-10-|----10---12-|

repeated once - and that's all there is to it!

So turn up the gain, crank up the volume and let 'er rip!

:D :D :D

Nice blast from the past Vic. It has been a while since I had a go at this one.
Its one of those songs you pick up when you first start learning and one of those songs you just don't play in a guitar shop

well I've been told not to anyway.

All in all a very concise lesson Vic.

Nice one,

Rod.

First off Vic I would like to thank you for this tab! I remember finding another tab of Paranoid when I first started playing since I heard it was a "beginner" song. It was a bit harder back then to play power chords (for me at least). Well, I just finished playing this song along with Ozzy, Tony Iomni and the rest of the gang and I kept up with them! I have to say it is my first "real" song. Yeas I know several of the "modified" songs in the easy song database but this is the real deal! I am so proud of myself no matter how easy this song is to play!

My next goal for this song is to learn the solo so I can record a backing tracl and then solo over it. Would you happen to have a tab for that? It sounds fairly easy to play just need to work up some speed to it.

Thanks again for bringing back some childhood memories!

Vic

Great song and tab, way to go!

I believe there is one extra G chord to the main riff played at the very end on the
D, G, and B strings. You simply lay your index finger down in a barre after playing
the E5 chord at the 12th fret. This is played staccato, very abruptly. It is a little
difficult to hear on the recording, but it is there.

Yes, Wes is right, there is that extra chord. It's so short and sharp, it's almost like an accident.

The solo's not too hideous to work out either.

Wes, you're definitely right about that G in there. Does the bass player play G or E on that? IF he plays E that's and Em7 in total. I'm the only guy in the band playing that G part and never asked the bass player which note he's hitting.

Interesting, I've been trying to learn this song and I play (or at least try very very hard ;) ) it a bit differently.

I play the opening riff as diads with a "slight" hammer on, like this:

G--------------------7h9-----7h9--|
D-7h9-7h9-7h9----7h9-----7h9------|
A-7---7---7-----------------------|

To me this sounds quite close to the original, but I guess that depends on the guitar and other gear too...

There's some other small differences too and I play most of the song with only two note power chords anyway.

But it might be that I'm doing it just plain wrong! :D

Iommi definitely plays it on the 6th string 12th fret. He says the tone is better there than playing it on the 5th string at the 7th fret. Don't forget to tune down a half step to Eb - wait forget down tuning (unless you really want to) I thought this was one that was down tuned
also, @ Corbind - the transcription for Bass I have seen actually seems to call for a B in that spot (if you are playing around the 5-7 frets on the "a" string, the "passing note" would be the e string 7th fret). So I guess that fits E-G-B

It is a small world for metal fanatics. I welcome you fellow musicians, especially the metalheads!
