Consists of two chords - G Am

Simple, straightforward strum pattern

I started with nothing - and I've still got most of it left.

Lady In Black

    Am
She came to me one morning, one lonely Sunday morning,
    G                                                                                 Am
her long hair flowing in the mid-winter wind.
I know not how she found me, for in darkness I was walking,
and destruction lay around me from a fight I could not win.

Am      G      Am     G   Am
Ahahaaahaahah, ahahaaahahaha !

She asked me name my foe then.  I said the need within some men
to fight and kill their brothers without thought of men or god.
And I begged her give me horses to trample down my enemies,
so eager was my passion to devour this waste of life.

But she would not think of battle that reduces men to animals,
so easy to begin and yet impossible to end.
For she the mother of all men had counciled me so wisely that
I feared to walk alone again and asked if she would stay.

"Oh lady lend your hand," I cried, "Oh let me rest here at your side."
"Have faith and trust in me," she said and filled my heart with life.
There is no strength in numbers.  I've no such misconceptions.
But when you need me be assured I won't be far away.

Thus having spoke she turned away and though I found no words to say
I stood and watched until I saw her black cloak disappear.
My labor is no easier, but now I know I'm not alone.
I find new heart each time I think upon that windy day.
And if one day she comes to you drink deeply
from her words so wise.
Take courage from her as your prize and say hello for me.

I started with nothing - and I've still got most of it left.

I love this song!
But I am not that good at playing.
Could you give me a little more help.
Like how many time do I strum each chord?
Just the basic just of it.  To get me started.
When I play with the song I can fill in the more fancy parts.
But I need just a little more to get me there.
Thank you for posting this!

I played this and my daughter sang - neighbours thought someone was getting murdered.

Try listening for the beat and doing a simple strum along with it - that's how I played it and it sounded fine.

Look-  I suck at playing.  And I need all the help I can get.  If I had a good ear and could pick up that kind of stuff and I would not need someone to hold my hand.  Please try to understand what we are going for here.

Bull,

Start with one down strum per beat :

..../......./....../../........./....../....../../
She came to me one morning, one lonely Sunday morning,

It's not necessarily 100%, but strum along and you'll get the idea

I am trying to remember this song (my first mistake).  But is this even close?  I have 4 albums and this is not on anyone of them.  I am going to have to buy the MP3.

It's difficult if you don't have the song, because by listening, it is easy to follow how the strumming goes.

I started with nothing - and I've still got most of it left.

ok being an Heep fan I tried this particular song. Now after a while I use the following strum which seems me quite similar to Miki Box (or at least how he played it on a live DVD)

1 2 (3)& 4

D D U D

so you have to miss the third beat downstrum

The pattern is to be played twice on Am, once on G

Micki Box probably uses two fast upstrokes instead of one but the overall feeling of the song remains

regarding the chorus I try a thing

D DD Ddu Ddu

maybe it is better to clear the things a bit:

chord changes: the song has always the following structure 2 measures of Am, 1 measure of G, 1 measure of Am both in th everses and in the chorus

strummin pattern: it could be played almost with any pattern you wish but I suggest you three different ones (simple/medium/difficult)

simple: straight eight notes in a down and up manner (Du/du/du/du)

medium: D du D du for each measure (1, 2&, 3, 4&)

difficult: bb ddu bb ddu for each measure, also dd ddu dd ddu if you don't like bass notes

Of course first pattern is easier to sing along with, while the "difficult" is more similar to the cd

Hi all

listening back to the song, I'd say that in the orginal recording Uriah Heep play it with a bass and strum eight notes pattern like bd/bD/bd/Bd

Anyway I have a Dvd of the Magician's Birthday Party and in that concert Ken hensley play it with the following, quite fast sixteen notes pattern

ddu/udu/ddu/udu

cheers

Matteo
