looking for a set up utilizing a laptop computer. I have seen a couple of guys using a laptop on a stand to store and access a song list, play the song pieced together with midi files. The music is scrolled using a pedal. They then play, usually rhythym guitar and sing the vocals. does anyone know how this is all set up and hooked upto make everything work together?

There are numerous ways. You can just run a sequencer with the MIDI files loaded attached to some plugs, then use a MIDI controller to start/stop songs. If you play electric guitar you can plug it straight into the laptop and use a VST modeler. You can then mix the guitar with the backing in the sequencer and send it out to the PA for a near-perfect mix no matter where you play.
