just wondering why some sort of method couldn't be worked out for guitar tab which would indicate how long a note should be held for

example:
|-----------------|------|---------|
|-----------------|------|---------|
|-----------------|------|---------|
|-----------------|------|---------|
|-----------------|------|---------|
|--3,--3,--0,--0,-|--3.-|--0:-0:-|

, = quarter note
. = whole note
: = half note
; = three quarters

just wondering

Most of the tab I read also has standard notation.  That lets you psych it out pretty well.

I've also seen some tab that tries to indicate something of how long a note should be held, circling whole notes, etc.  But I think the best thing is to read tab in conjunction with standard notation.

Oh please not another reason for guitarists to refuse to learn how to communicate with other musicians   ::)  :) (only half seriously)

I suppose technically it's possible, though it's also quite possible to include fingering symbols in standard notation. In both cases it makes it slightly more difficult to read. I find having both on the same page easier to absorb for some reason.

It seems to me that the original reasons for using straight tab on the internet are fading as more people has access to programs such as power tab.  Such programs that include midi also seems to encourage more accurate tabbing.

Guess I'm with Musenfreund on this  :)
