Beethoven wrote the 5th between 1803 and 1805 I believe - if he'd had MIDI and a PC he'd have done it in a week.

Can't help with the Holst - sorry.

The Planets was written 1914-16. Beethoven's 5th was 1804-08.

i put the dates into google with the names and got some more specific dates (incase anyones interested)

Beethoven started composing his fifth in Autumn 1807 and was first played on December 22nd 1808 in Vienna, along with the premier of his 6th Symphony and his 4th piano concerto. :D

and Clifford Bax first talked to Holst about astrology in 1913 and he started writing in 1914 and the first performance of Mars was given in Autumn 1914 as a gift to one of Holsts friends as a present..

Thank You Grove Dictionary!!

if he'd had MIDI and a PC he'd have done it in a week.

you cant be serious can you?

You never know. Handel's Messiah was written in less than three weeks without PC or Midi.

I wonder if Ludwig would have written faster if he'd had a good hearing aid.

aid implies he had listening difficulties.. he went completely deaf lol..

thats one of the most horrible things that can happen..

like Jason Becker getting that disease that disabled him so he cant move.. he was the most prominant guitarist out of the late 80's / early 90's.

Deafness doesn't mean you can't hear it in your head - Felix Pappalardi, I believe, now suffers from total hearing loss - and Pete Townshend's ears are reputed to be more than a bit dodgy ........just because you get knocked down doesn't mean you have to count to eleven before you get up.............

the thing about beethoven was that he knew notes.. he didnt have a PC to hear how stuff sounds, he could tell notes on different instruments and chords and he had enough experience to know what he wrote.. would sound like..

i can never imagine being that good at note recognition, but it is really impressive.
