OK, so I've been fooling around playing "outside" chords, and I've come up with something that sounds a bit strange (and I like it), although there's a gap I can't seem to fill.
So far I have
| C | Ab | ? | F Fm |
(I-bVI-?-IV-bIV)
and the voicings are (I'm using my keyboard)
C - C E G
Ab - C Eb Ab
F - C F A
Fm - C F Ab
So I'm trying to find a chord that will fit into that third bar. I have this problem a lot, so I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to overcome this stumbling block. I've heard that Paul McCartney would sit at a piano for days trying to find the chord that was in his head, but I don't have any specific chord in my head to work with. There's no particular melody yet, but it's sticking around C.
I'd also like to hear what people would put in the third bar. The best I can find so far is E (B E G#) but it just sounds wrong.
Am I overthinking this?
Maybe this is simply my last post on this page spilling over, but how about Caug7 (C, E, G# (which is Ab) and Bb)?
What I find helps with these matters is having a melody line. Often that will give me a much needed clue to the missing piece.
Peace
How 'bout a Gm7/D (D F G Bb)?
