What is it called when you play a note (or chord) but don't push down on the string. I'm not talking about natural harmonics, you apply more pressure than that, but you down actually push the string against the fretboard.
Sort of like a palm-mute but with your fretting hand.

I have also heard it called a fret hand mute or just a muted chord (or note). I don't know of any "proper" name for it, but I am sure there is one somewhere!

It is a muted note, and there are lots of uses for them.

In tabs, they appear to be called "ghost notes".

I have seen written in tabs like this:

Were you just mute the strings by just lightly pressing them with an open hand and strum them normaly, you can also move your hand over to be over a fret bar and get a half harmonic half muted sound like in the intro to Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Sprit. :wink:

Ghosts notes are totally different though, just to clarify.

Frusciante from RHCP uses muting alot. He'll strum all of the strings, muting the ones he doesn't want to hear and fretting the ones he does.
