What do I do if I'm a guitarist with the same name as a very famous guitarist.  Should I adopt a stage name?
If not, would this be a problem if I start trying to copywrite songs under my name?

Better to ask John Williams - either the composer or the guitarist.

I started with nothing - and I've still got most of it left.
Did you know that the word "gullible" is not in any dictionary?

Ask David Bowie(Jones)

But no woman born in the 50s would ever confuse THOSE two...  ;)

Actually, it's Davy Jones... But ask him, or, as stated, John Williams or Tom Yoder... Many examples. It's your name, if you like it, then keep it.

But then... I thought John Williams was one person.  I should have such problems.

-Your name is Michael Bolton?
-Yeah, it was fine until that no talent ***clown started winning Grammies.
-You ever think about changing it?
-Why should I change, he's the one that sucks!
