v1
I was packing my bags in the morning.
He came walking up the stairs.
Said son where you think your going.
I said daddy I just dont care.
Maybe I'll join the Army,
It's time to head out on my own
He just stood the smiling.
Said theres one thing that I know.
chorus
A mans gotta find his own way
No matter what the cost,
Knowing where your going,
Means sometime getting lost.
Just when you think you got it.
You'll lose it once again.
Then the day you find yourself,
You'll wonder where you've been.
v2
So i made my own path,
So sure where i'd go,
Too many times the hi-way,
Turned into a dirt road,
And love turned into heartache
Too many times it seems,
The drugs and the booze didnt kill me.
But it brought me to my knee's.
v3
I know i sat there smiling
On my way back home.
Thinking about what daddy said,
So many years ago
chorus
A mans gotta find his own way.
No matter what the cost.
Knowing where your going
Means sometime's getting lost.
Just when you think you got it,
You'll lose it once again,
Then the day you find yourself,
You'll wonder where you've been.
v4
Now im standing on my own stairs,
Watching my boy pack,
Heading out to find himself,
Says he aint coming back.
bridge
I just stood there smiling,
Like my daddy did.
Repeating what my daddy said,
When i was just a kid.
A mans gotta find his own way
No matter what the cost,
Knowing where your going,
Means sometime getting lost.
Just when you think you got it.
You'll lose it once again.
Then the day you find yourself,
You'll wonder where you've been.

first off, I dig your signature 8)
growing up in Reno, NV, I've heard my fair share of country, you wouldn't believe how many people still dress as cowboys here :D
This is definetely a good song, nice and simple, while still being entertaining throughout, by using details
one thing that is a key element of this stlye is a very peculiar imagery, if it's about a woman, there's always a mention of her eyes, hair, expressions. Lots of metaphors, i.e. her hair, those tumblin' waves
there's nothing else I have to say, great rhythm!

I don't follow my dreams, I just ask em' where they're going and catch up with them later.

Did you see that!
This is great. I'd be tempted to combine the third and fourth verses, and put the bridge after them and before the closing choruses.
Have you tried a standard I-vi-IV-V sequence Ken? I don't think it needs anything complicated because the words are good enough to carry it.
Best,
A :-)
