The local Sam Ash seems to get a shipment of these in every 6 months or so. Little mini-palet. 12-15, and priced about $120 or so. Sometimes $99 if it around a sale.

Ok I think I'm still on planet earth but I'm not that familiar with the Squire 51, what's the deal? Is there any particular significance? Does the 51 denote a year?
What is the tone like? A Strat a Tele...neither?
Greg now that we realize that this isn't a Rondo guitar I'll say it again very nice looking guitar and great workmanship.

It's a long way to the top if you want to rock n roll!
as delivered:
definitely neither twangy as Tele,
nor scooped as a Strat, so ...
while Fender-like in it's generally snappy nature, I'd say neither.
as I mod them, they get a bit more sustain (string-thru-body) and midrange rough 'n' tough (P90).
what is it? an original Squier design, it's a mongrel sporting a first-year 1951 P-Bass pickguard and control plate, Tele neck (also similar to the first P-Bass) and Strat body. the neck pup is supposed to be Strat-like, but is very anemic, resembling a Strat pup only superficially.

Hey Cnev, the deal was the price, these were going for as low as $69 new from on-line stores. They had some issues like sharp frets and the occasional crocked bridge but for the most part you got a pretty nice neck, a fair body and misc hardware for cheap. They came in three colors, black, sunburst and vintage blond (banana pudding) with white or black pickgaurds. Some folks bought several.
Turned out to be a great learning tool for someone starting out and wanting to setup their own stuff. I mean how much damage could you do, right?
I picked mine up at the MF warehouse as a returned item. It was half off being damaged (the nut was missing from the output jack) 20% off coupon and I got it for $40, and they threw in a stand and cord. I had never even picked up a guitar before that.
I would still have mine but it was the blonde and I never grew to love the color, I would have painted it but the blondes became scarce so I sold it for 4 times what I paid.
I thought it was a great guitar, not just great for the price.
Jack
Very nice!
I've always wanted to customize a guitar. Guess when i've got a bit more time and money that i will do. Thanks for the inspiration

Gnease, you'll get a kick out of this. Remember my Squier '51 "Mojocaster"? Guy on ebay just sold a '51, totally stock except he used my logo. Got $365 for it! The power of mojo!
